A Habitica alternative without the roleplay.
If you want Habitica's XP and levels without the avatar, gear, parties, and quest line, BetterHabitsDaily is the closest match: 5 XP per completed habit, 10 to 35 XP for daily challenges, a level every 100 XP, and a running streak, with no game world attached. It's free with no paid tier, needs no account, and keeps data in your browser rather than on a server.
Habitica is a good product and this page isn't an argument that it's bad. The RPG is the whole point of Habitica. If the RPG is the part you don't want, you're using a game to do a checklist's job, and that gets tiring around week three.

What you keep
The part of Habitica that changes behavior is small, and it survives here intact. Completing a habit is worth 5 XP. Three daily challenges rotate in each day from a pool of twenty covering health, mindset, fitness, learning, focus, discipline, and social, worth 10 to 35 XP by difficulty. Every 100 XP is a level, and a running streak counts the days you've shown up, with milestones at 3, 7, 14, 30, 60, 100, and 365 days.
A reward loop, a number that goes up, and a streak you'd rather not break. That's what makes consistency visible, and it's most of what anyone gets out of gamification. Everything Habitica stacks on top of it is a game.
What you lose
Worth being blunt about, because for some people these are the reasons to stay put.
- Social accountability. Habitica's parties and guilds mean other people notice when you skip. Nothing here replaces that, and for some people it's the only thing that has ever worked.
- Loss aversion by damage. Missing a daily in Habitica costs HP. It's a sharper consequence than a streak resetting to zero.
- Collection and progression depth. Gear, pets, gold, quests, and classes give long-term goals beyond the habits themselves.
- Cross-device sync. Habitica's account means your data follows you to any device. Local storage means it stays in one browser on one machine.
If two or more of those matter to you, stay on Habitica. It's free to use and it does all of them well.
Why the RPG becomes the problem
The complaint that comes up over and over from people leaving Habitica is rarely that the game is bad. It's that the game turns into a second thing to maintain. You started tracking habits to cut overhead, and now there's gear to manage, a party waiting on you, and a boss fight your absence is losing. The habit layer and the game layer end up competing for the same attention.
HP damage has the same double edge. It works right up until a genuinely bad week, at which point opening the app means getting punished for a week you already know went badly. A streak resetting to zero is a softer landing. It starts over instead of piling up debt.
Switching takes about a minute
There's no import path, and there doesn't need to be one. Open the tracker and add your habits, with eight developer-oriented presets available at one tap each. That's it. No email, no password, no confirmation link sitting in your inbox. Your Habitica account stays exactly where it is if you decide to go back.
Other alternatives worth knowing
- Loop Habit Tracker — free, open source, Android only, no account and no internet needed. Strong charts, no gamification beyond streaks.
- Habitify — polished and cross-platform, but the free tier stops at three habits and it's $2.49/mo billed annually or $59.99 lifetime past that. Account required.
- Streaks — $5.99 once, Apple devices only, no separate account. Clean and durable if you're entirely in that ecosystem.
- Notion templates — endlessly flexible, and the most daily friction of anything here. No streaks or XP unless you build them yourself.

Questions.
Is there a free alternative to Habitica with XP and levels but no RPG roleplay?
BetterHabitsDaily keeps the reward loop and drops the game world. Completing a habit earns 5 XP, daily challenges award 10 to 35 XP, and every 100 XP is a level. What's missing is the avatar, the gear, the pets, the party, and the quest line. It's free with no paid tier and needs no account, so nothing carries over from Habitica except the habits you type in again, which takes about a minute.
What is the difference between Habitica and BetterHabitsDaily?
Habitica is a full role-playing game wrapped around a task manager: you build an avatar, buy gear with in-game gold, join parties, fight bosses with friends, and take HP damage for missed dailies. It requires an account and keeps your data on its servers. BetterHabitsDaily is a browser page with XP, levels, streaks, and daily challenges and nothing else behind it, with no account and no server involved. Habitica has more depth. This has less to keep up with.
Is Habitica free?
Yes, Habitica is usable free with an account. The optional subscription costs $4.99 per month (or $47.99 per year) and grants gems, mystery items, and other perks rather than unlocking core habit tracking. Gems can also be bought outright, from $0.99 for four.
Why do people quit Habitica?
The usual reasons are maintenance and guilt. The RPG layer is the appeal at first and an obligation later, because gear, pets, and party quests are a second system to keep up with on top of the habits themselves. HP damage for missed dailies also turns a bad week into a punishment. For some people that's exactly the point. For others it's the reason the app stops getting opened. If the game is the part you enjoy, none of this applies and Habitica is the better tool.
Is a Notion habit tracker template better than a dedicated habit app?
A Notion template is far more flexible and much worse on friction, which is the thing that decides whether you keep using it. Opening a workspace, navigating to a database, and updating a row is several steps, and templates rarely come with streaks or XP unless you build them yourself. A dedicated tracker makes the daily action one tap and puts a streak in front of you that you would rather not break. Notion also requires an account and keeps everything on its servers, so it fails the no-signup and local-data tests outright.
