'Super Movers' Keep Half the Brain-Decline Risk in Their 80s — and the Habit Starts Decades Earlier

A Neurology study found older adults who stay fast on their feet have half the risk of cognitive decline, even with Alzheimer's-related brain changes.

A study published June 16 in Neurology describes a rare group of older adults it calls “super movers”: people past 80 who walk at the pace of someone decades younger and hold onto their thinking skills far better than their peers. The striking part: some of them stay sharp even when their brains carry the same Alzheimer’s-related damage that leaves others impaired.

What happened

Researchers led by Dr. Joe Verghese tracked the cognitive function of about 4,000 people aged 80 and over from the Health and Retirement Study network across several years. Only 6% to 10% of that age group qualified as super movers, defined largely by gait speed: how fast they walk, which is a well-established marker of overall brain and body health.

Those super movers were roughly half as likely to experience a decline in brain function as their same-age peers. The finding that got researchers’ attention was that this held even in people whose brains showed the physical hallmarks of Alzheimer’s and other cognitive disorders. “This suggests they may possess resilience mechanisms that allow them to maintain cognitive function even in the presence of age-related brain changes,” Verghese said.

The team points to a bundle of lifestyle factors behind exceptional aging rather than a single gene: regular physical activity, diet, sleep, and mood, plus environmental ones like neighborhood walkability and social engagement. Movement sits at the center of the profile: enough of it to keep strength, balance, and walking speed into late life.
